“Biti Defies State Crackdown: ‘Our Voices Will Never Be Silenced’ as Opposition Rejects Power Grab in Zimbabwe”

Harare— Opposition leader Tendai Biti issued a bold warning to Zimbabwe’s ruling authorities, declaring that arrests and intimidation will never suppress the fight for democracy and constitutional rule. Addressing a room full of journalists in Harare, the former Finance Minister fiercely criticized ongoing government attempts to alter presidential election procedures, extend executive power, and pave the way for dynastic succession.
“They can kill us, they can arrest us, but our voices will not be silenced,” Biti asserted. “We are standing for the people—across social media, churches, communities, and villages—who are united against this status quo of theft, plunder, and authoritarian consolidation.”
Biti reminded the nation that Zimbabwe’s liberation war was fought for universal suffrage, warning that plans to replace direct presidential elections with indirect or hereditary systems threaten the country’s very existence. “Zimbabwe is a republic,” he emphasized. “Any attempt to replace that with a dubious monarchy is a blatant coup against our constitution, and we will not accept it.”
Linking these constitutional battles to daily struggles, Biti condemned the recent demolition of informal traders’ stalls in Harare. He argued that such state actions rob ordinary citizens of their dignity, especially when most Zimbabweans rely on the informal economy to survive. “When you bulldoze a stall belonging to a woman selling tomatoes to pay school fees for her child, you have lost decency, you have lost ubuntu,” he said, dismissing official claims of economic growth as empty rhetoric.
Reaffirming his coalition’s resolve, Biti vowed unwavering resistance—promising to use political mobilization and civic action to confront the regime and defend Zimbabwe’s democracy.
