Tributes are pouring in for the prominent Zimbabwean academic and international affairs analyst, Dr Tapera Knox Chitiyo, who passed away over the weekend at the age of 65.
He died on Sunday, 6 September 2026, after a long battle with bowel cancer. Dr Chitiyo was highly respected for his extensive work on Zimbabwean politics, African security, and diaspora affairs.
He served as an associate fellow in the Africa Programme at the renowned think tank [Chatham House](https://www.chatham house.org “Chatham House”) and had been the president of the Britain Zimbabwe Society since 2015.
Friends, colleagues, and political figures have shared heartfelt messages remembering his humility, intelligence, and immense dedication to his field.
Members of the academic and political community, including politician Fadzayi Mahere, expressed deep sadness, describing Dr Chitiyo as “a legend in many respects” and offering sincere condolences to his family.
The society announced his passing to its members with great sorrow, extending prayers to his wife Nhamburiko, his sister Catherine, and his wider family, noting they had just celebrated his 65th birthday together last month.
Media personality and friend Chofamba shared a moving tribute on X (formerly Twitter), describing him as a “soft-spoken gentleman” whose humility hid his massive achievements. He highlighted Dr Chitiyo’s strong legacy of research and his passion for diaspora community engagement.
Colleagues recalled his frequent appearances on international news platforms, such as the BBC, where he provided expert commentary and sharp analysis on complex Zimbabwean affairs.
Dr Chitiyo leaves behind a massive legacy in African academia and research, both at home in Zimbabwe and abroad.
