A Zimbabwean who assaulted a 40-year-old Polish citizen in Lublin has been deported.
The Zimbabwean, who was intoxicated at the time, attacked the Polish man by striking him on the back of the neck with a glass bottle, only centimetres away from an artery.
The Pole was hospitalised, and it was initially thought that he had sustained a spinal cord injury. Fortunately, later tests confirmed that his spinal cord was not damaged.
At first, the attack was classified as a lower-level criminal offence, and the migrant was not going to be deported.
However, following widespread public outrage and an appeal from Polish right-wing lawmakers, the police asked the Border Guard to issue a deportation decision.
Polish media outlet Dziennik Wschodni reported that the migrant has already been expelled from Poland.
The Zimbabwean worked as a DJ based in Warsaw and had reportedly travelled to Lublin for the Africa Day Festival, which was being held in the city.
Zimbabweans have become the third-largest foreign-national group in Lublin, behind Ukrainians and Belarusians.
Data from the Central Statistical Office shows that there are already around 1,200 Zimbabweans living there.
This is not the first case of a Zimbabwean committing a serious crime in Lublin.
In 2024, police detained a 39-year-old Zimbabwean man suspected of raping a 15-year-old girl.
Based on a population of around 1,200 Zimbabweans in Lublin, one recorded rape case would equal roughly 83.33 cases per 100,000 people.
Poland’s police-recorded rape rate is approximately 1.29 to 1.36 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
