JOHANNESBURG — Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe, the son of late former Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe, has been fined 600,000 rands and deported to Zimbabwe following a court ruling in Johannesburg.
The fine includes 400,000 rands for pointing a firearm, a charge that carried an alternative sentence of 24 months in prison and an additional 200,000 rands or 18 months’ imprisonment for violating South Africa’s Immigration Act.
His co-accused, Tobias Matonhodze, was sentenced to three years in prison.
The case stems from a February shooting incident at Mugabe’s residence in Hyde Park, Johannesburg, in which an employee was injured.
Earlier this month, Mugabe pleaded guilty to immigration-related offences and to pointing a firearm, while Matonhodze pleaded guilty to attempted murder charges.
Following sentencing, Mugabe was taken directly from court to O. R. Tambo International Airport for deportation to Zimbabwe.
