ZRP blocks Bank workers peaceful demo

By Staff Reporter

THE Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) recently blocked a peaceful workers demonstration leaving the sector’s workers vowing to explore alternative avenues to air their grievances.

The banking sector workers have been at loggerheads with the sector’s employers as they demand better wages consistent with lucrative profits generated by employers.

After failing to reach an amicable agreement, the union recently approached the ZRP notifying them of the intention to stage peaceful demos.

Despite seeking permission to hold the peaceful event, ZRP Superintendent Operations for the Officer commanding Harare Suburban District, J Masawi turned down the request to host the peaceful event.

“I acknowledge receipt of your notification letter received on 11 November 2024in connection with the above  heading whereby you intend to demonstrate and petition the Banking and Employers Association of Zimbabwe Chairperson, Lawrence Kwendambira at his offices at number 2 Piers Road, Borrowdale Harare on the 14th of November 2024 from 1200 to 14oohrs.

“Your notification letter falls short of the requirements as specified in section5 and 7 of the Maintenance of Peace and Order Act and thus has not been sanctioned. You are encouraged to settle your matters through the Labour Court,” the letter said.

The police said by copy of the letter, Officer in Charge Borrowdale has been advised to disperse and arrest any unlawful demonstrations.

The ZIBAWU banned demo becomes the second in a row following the earlier ban of the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) organized event on social justice event.
